Tomorrow, the international motor sport federation FIA (the Féderation International de l’Automobile), holds its Prize Giving Gala in Monte Carlo. The gala is a celebration for motor sport superstars such as Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Loeb and Marcus Grönholm. This year they will be accompanied by 24-year-old Patrik Sandell and his co-driver Emil Axelsson, who became Junior World Rally Champions last Sunday.
‘It feels a bit strange going to a tuxedo-gala with these superstars. It still hasn’t hit me yet that we are invited as the Junior World Rally Champions,’ says Patrik Sandell.
However, they have had some practice in receiving plaudits since the victory. The Swedish motor sport federation held a reception and a press conference for them in Stockholm last Tuesday. When Patrik arrived in his hometown Östersund on Wednesday, he was met with a large reception committee on the stairs of the town hall, headed by with Jens Nilsson, chief of the local government.
Emil Axelsson, who decided to become a co-driver already at the age of five, is also aware of the meaning of victory. Several years ago, he was asked to about his goals with a carrier in motor sports.
‘…to attend the FIA Prize Giving Gala in Monte Carlo. If I ever get to go, I will know I have achieved something really big’, Emil Axelsson replied.
