Clio Super 1600 bows out in style!

At the end of an action-packed GB rally, Patrik Sandell was crowned Junior World Rally Champion. The Swede took Dani Sordo’s title in his first season at this level to give Clio Super 1600 its second JWRC world title after Brice Tirabassi’s 2003 triumph.
Going into the GB Rally, six drivers were in with a chance of winning the Junior WRC title. The three stages held in Wales were not kind to the favourites, who all had their fair share of problems. Like his rivals, Patrik Sandell, who led with three special stages to go, started badly. But, thanks to the SupeRally system, he was able to finish in fifth place, which won him enough points to secure the title!

Thus Patrik, who is 24, won the World Championship at the first time of asking, a result that is even more impressive when you consider that he was competing against experienced drivers who had official backing from constructors. The young driver from Östersund, who has remained faithful to Renault Sport products ever since he won the Swedish Championship in a Clio Group N, is savouring his title: “My goal for my first season in a Super 1600 was just to get some experience under my belt, so this result is beyond my wildest dreams! The last rally was strange, but the end was fantastic. I hope to be able to defend my title next year.”

His success owed a lot to the qualities of Clio Super 1600. “To win this championship, you have to get to the finish and pick up points as often as possible. The Clio is very reliable, thanks to all the work done by Renault Sport over the last few years”, Patrik added. “I must also thank the Clio Junior Team Sweden team, who adapted the car to meet my needs. Everything worked as it should and I was able to concentrate 100% on my driving. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

In its fifth season of racing, Clio Super 1600 has thus claimed its second world title, after the success of Clio Team and Brice Tirabassi in 2003. It also boasts two European titles (Simon Jean-Joseph in 2004 and Renato Travaglia in 2005), not to mention around fifteen national titles in countries including France, Spain, Portugal and Germany. Just as it prepares to bow out of the competition, Clio has shown that it remains a benchmark in the Super 1600 category.

Its replacement is Clio Renault Sport R3, which was officially unveiled a few days ago. Several drivers have already expressed an interest in driving this new car, based on the new Group R regulations, in next year’s JWRC.
