Parmander returns to rallying
Swede Staffan Parmander is back in WRC business again. He is one of the most experienced Swedish co drivers ever, and now 53 years old, he is back again in top rallying. He will co drive one of the young and hot Swedes, Patrik Sandell in a Skoda Fabia S2000.
Parmander is most well known after his and Kenneth Eriksson´s successes during 14 World Rally Championship seasons. They were total winners of five WRC-rallies but in 2001 Parmander retired from the rally sport. At least that was his ambition.
A phone call from Patrik Sandell changed everything and from now on he is the new co driver in his team.
-Considering my age I am flattered, Parmander says.
In fact he never let rally go definitely. He has been working with Patrik Sandell and his former co driver Emil Axelsson with pace notes among other things.
- My ambition is to create a positive atmosphere in the car and I will bring my experience from mine and Kenneth Eriksson years, helping Patrik to find a new level in rallying.
MONDAY JANUARY 10 2011
Patrik and Emil split up!
After seven successful years together Patrik Sandell and Emil Axelsson has announced that they will go separate ways in 2011.
- We've been a great team for several years and have won a lot together. But for a while we've been discussing what we could do to develop even more individually, and we came to the conclusion that we both wanted to see what happened if we made this change, says Patrik Sandell.
Sandell and Axelsson won the Junior World Rally Championship in 2006, and silver in Super 2000 World Rally Championship just a couple of months ago.
- We've had a long, fun and successful collaboration together, and it feels great that we could end it on a high note, says Emil Axelsson.
Axelsson is now teaming up with PG Andersson for Rallye Monte Carlo, while Sandell will be joined by Staffan Parmander as a codriver for Rally Sweden in February.
FRIDAY JANUARY 7 2011
Sandell ready for Rally Sweden
Today Patrik Sandell confirmed his participation in this year's Rally Sweden. Like last year in a Skoda Fabia Super 2000, backed by Red Bull.
Sandell and his co-driver Emil Axelsson won the silver medal in the Super 2000 World Rally Championship together with Skoda and Red Bull. A cooperation that continues.
- Rally Sweden is confirmed and we are negotiating right now for the rest of the season. This rally is always one of the highlights and I'm really looking forward to it, said Patrik Sandell.
Skoda Sweden's press officer Henrik Svensson is pleased that entry to the rally is completed.
- I'm looking forward to a new season with the Fabia and with Patrik behind the wheel. And to kick it off with a real winter rally is everything we could wish for, said Henrik Svensson.
February 10th to 13th is the dates for Rally Sweden, with Karlstad as the rally center.
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 14 2010
Sandell and Red Bull clinch WRC S2000 Cup!
The Red Bull Rally Team has won the 2010 FIA WRC Cup for Super 2000 teams, after a great performance from Patrik Sandell on the final round of the World Rally Championship in Britain.
Red Bull was the first of six teams that entered the inaugural Super 2000 World Rally Championship this year, with Sandell finishing third in the class on Rally Great Britain. The Swede has also ended up second in the final drivers' rankings, at the wheel of his Skoda Fabia S2000 run by the experienced Baumschlager Rally Racing team.
Sandell, the 2006 Junior World Rally Champion, put in a heroic drive on the final round of the Super 2000 Championship, which saw him compete in Sweden, Jordan, New Zealand, Finland, Germany, France and Britain this year, claiming victories in Germany and France.
The 28-year-old was among the frontrunners once more in Great Britain, on the cold and damp gravel stages of Wales. But after winning a stage on the opening morning of the rally, Sandell was hit by a power steering pump problem, traced to a broken pipe, which cost him five minutes over the course of Friday afternoon and the chance to win the rally.
Sandell fought back brilliantly over the nine stages of day two, climbing back to fifth from a starting position of eighth despite tricky conditions with inconsistent grip. On the final day, Sandell stepped his pace up another gear, taking another place on the opening stage and then winning the following stage to home in on the third-placed competitor in a tense finale.
Sandell stormed the final two stages to end up third in the S2000 category at the end of the rally, but without the problem on the opening day he would have been in strong contention for the class victory. "I'm very happy with our rally and this result; it's a great honour for me to clinch the FIA WRC S2000 Cup for Red Bull," he said. "Although our season didn't get off to the best of starts, it all came together and we were very competitive with two victories and some more podiums as well. I love Rally Great Britain but it was particularly tricky this year, with the weather making the surfaces really slippery and unpredictable. I'd like to thank Red Bull for giving me this chance, and also the BRR team for doing a great job throughout the season."
BRR team principal Raimund Baumschlager, who competes on the Austrian Rally Championship in a Super 2000 Skoda with Red Bull backing, commented: "I'd like to congratulate Patrik, his co-driver Emil Axelsson, and Red Bull for a great season and a great rally. This was a tricky event for Patrik but he never once gave up and the result is a well-deserved victory for Red Bull in the FIA WRC Cup for Super 2000 Teams, as well as an excellent podium for Patrik."
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 13 2010
Sandell and Red Bull aim for Teams' Cup in Britain.
Swedish driver Patrik Sandell is aiming to clinch the Teams' Cup in the Super 2000 World Rally Championship in his Skoda Fabia S2000 backed by Red Bull.
Sandell came into the Rally Great Britain with a chance of lifting the drivers' championship, but his hopes were hit by a power steering problem that caused him to drop five minutes in the afternoon of day one.
Undeterred, the Red Bull driver returned to action today with a car that was once more perfect, for nine demanding stages around South Wales. Sandell steadily made his way back up the leaderboard, and his objective is now to clinch the Teams' Cup, awarded to the best performing Super 2000 team over the course of the year.
Rally Great Britain, the final round of the championship this year, is a gravel event but several of today's stages contained asphalt sections that were made extremely slippery by mud on the road.
Despite the inconsistent grip, Sandell set top three times all morning to climb to sixth in the Super 2000 World Championship classification by lunchtime. In the afternoon he made up another place, putting himself firmly on track to clinch the Teams' Cup for the Red Bull-backed BRR squad, run by multiple Austrian Champion Raimund Baumschlager - who himself has tasted plenty of rally success with Red Bull.
When conditions are mixed, Sandell is often at his best and once more he made no mistakes throughout the day, which took in nine stages and concluded with a popular spectator superspecial in Cardiff Bay.
"After what happened yesterday, we had no choice but to go for it," said the 28-year-old, who won the Junior World Rally Championship in 2006. "In some ways that made it a bit easier as we didn't have to think about any tactics: it was just a question of going as fast as possible. With the asphalt sections today it was quite tricky, but I really enjoyed these stages and I really want to see if we can secure the Teams' Cup for Red Bull."
Baumschlager, whose team has historically been associated with Red Bull, commented: "Patrik has driven very well today and the Teams' Cup is a very nice challenge for us now. Rallying is very much a team effort, so it would be a really nice reward for everyone if we were able to do it. We still have four complicated stages tomorrow, with uncertain weather, so it is very important for us to stay concentrated but so far we are on track."
The final day of the rally takes in 76.14 competitive kilometres, with the first stage starting at 0747. The winner is expected on the finish ramp in Cardiff just before 1500.
